石油は江戸以前から日本でもわずかに使われていたが、本格的な採掘・利用が始まったのは明治時代に入ってから。石油を使うランプも明治に入り輸入されるようになり、従来のろうそくや菜種油の灯りよりはるかに明るいその光は、日本人の夜の暮らしを大きく変えていった。

While there had been a small use of petroleum in Japan since before the Edo period, it was not until the Meiji era that full-scale extraction and utilization began. Lamps using petroleum were imported during the Meiji era, and gas light, which was much brighter than that of conventional candles or rapeseed oil, greatly changed the night life of the Japanese people.
