Holloway Ointments entered the United States trade in the mid-1850s after the founder Thomas Holloway sought to expand his presence in the medical field beyond England. Originally founded in 1837, Holloway sent an agent to the United States and eventually decided to settle his business in New York. This particular ointment pot includes the address “80 Maiden Lane New York”, which served as the initial headquarters for the pot until operations were relocated to 78 Maiden Lane in 1878. This ointment was marketed as a universal cure for inflammation ailments such as rheumatism, and therefore Holloway Ointments and similar products quickly became staples in American households.
