Old East Prison, Cell Key 3D Model
Artefact from the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums.
Cell Key from the Old East Prison located in Lodge Walk which opened in 1831 and closed in 1891, due to a new prison at Craiginches.
The East Prison was enlarged in 1868 and at the time contained 95 cells and was the only gaol in the city. Gaol was the more frequent spelling for jail and was still used in the early 19th century.
The prison is known for an alleged breakout attempt during the transfer from Bridewell, with some inmates being more successful than others.
