The Kilmadock Stone was first discovered in June 2019 by ROOK – Rescuers of Old Kilmadock. It was recorded by HES and then re-covered until such time as an investigative dig be undertaken.
In September 2022, a team led by Dr. Murray Cook and funded by the Pictish Arts Society excavated the stone, which led to the discovery of the Ogham Inscription. A representative from Graciella Ainsworth was on site to produce an estimation of the cost of retrieval of the stone.
The cost of retrieval and storage was raised from the many generous contributors, in part through the GoFundMe page. In March 2024, with Dr Elspeth Reid of PAS in attendance, the stone was carefully lifted by the conservators and left Old Kilmadock on its journey to Edinburgh.
The funds for restoration and conservation of the stone must be achieved within two years, otherwise it will need to be returned to Old Kilmadock and re-buried. You can contribute to the GoFundMe here.
