Old Oswestry hillfort is a prehistoric enclosure built more than 2,000 years ago. It is one of the largest in England, with a complex set of five ramparts enclosing an internal area of 8.4 hectares.
There were four phases of construction between the eighth century BCE and the first century CE. The original hillfort comprised a double bank and ditch with entrances at the east and west ends. Later, the west entrance was enlarged and additional ramparts were added. The hillfort interior was used for military training in 1914-18.
The hillfort is currently maintained by English Heritage. There is more information on their website: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/old-oswestry-hillfort/history/
