Part of the “Communal Spirit: 3,000 Years of Mexican Artistry” exhibit.
The Olmec was among the most distinguished civilizations in Mesoamerica, and it was the first. By 1500 B.C., Olmec artists and sculptors were skilled in capturing the human face as well as the entire human form. This civilization expanded to cover an area from Guerrero to Veraccruz in Mexico and further into Gautemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. The influence of the Olmec is seen not only in imported objects but also in “borrowed stylistic elements and symbols.”.
