I was excited to discover in my research on the Temple of Zeus at Olympia (ca. 460 BCE) that the University of Heidelberg had made available online the published findings of the German excavations that began in 1875 (https://goo.gl/eyPAo9). I created this model from a photograph of the reconstructed west pediment sculptures (https://goo.gl/z7UESt). It is polychromed per ancient Greek artistic traditions.
“The subject of the West Pediment, the fight between the Lapiths and the centaurs at the wedding of Peirithoos and Deidameia, is clearly identifiable from the physical remains....In the years following the invasion of the Persians and their repulsion by the Greeks, the period in which the Temple of Zeus was built, the subject was a reference to that crisis and ultimate victory of the Greeks....”
The remains are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.
