御嶽型対空巡洋戦艦
In the late 1930s, as the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) grew increasingly aware of the importance of naval aviation and the shortcomings in the fleet’s anti-aircraft capabilities, an ambitious warship construction project was initiated. Aimed at safeguarding carrier task groups against the growing threat of aerial attacks, the IJN approved the design of a specialized anti-aircraft battlecruiser. This new class, named after the majestic and sacred volcano mount Ontake, represented a breakthrough in IJN warship design philosophy, focusing on the creation of a mobile anti-air fortress. Construction of the Ontake-class vessels began in 1939, with Germany and Italy providing licenses for certain armed equipment, marking the IJN’s firm commitment to strengthening the fleet’s aerial defense capabilities.
