Herds of oreodonts roamed Oregon’s dry grasslands from 40 million to 10 million years ago. The oreodont was a sheep-sized animal, related to the camel, that acted like a wild pig.
Oreodont fossils in Oregon are commonly found in the area of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Fossils of various kinds of oreodonts can also be found in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming.
