Osiris was the ancient Egyptian god of the dead and king of the afterlife. Egyptian mythology tells of his murder by Seth, the brother of Osiris, and resurrected by his wife and sister Isis.
The pitting on the surface of this object is due to conservation treatment to remove corrosion (likely electrolysis) in the 1960s. The treatment has not only removed surface corrosion, but caused pitting where the corrosion had penetrated deeper into the object.
