“Trümmerfrauen” monument in the 1st district of Vienna. The monument is intended to commemorate the efforts of “Trümmerfrauen” (women who removed rubble from bombed buildings after the Second World War) in the reconstruction of the city destroyed by the Allies during and after the Second World War. The city government has opposed the erection of such a memorial because of a too undifferentiated view of history. Research indicates that many former National Socialists were conscripted to help with the reconstruction and that the number of volunteers was rather small. Therefore, the memorial was privately financed and is located on a private property near the Mölker Bastei. The monument was created by the German landscape architect and sculptor Magnus Angermeier and shows a seated woman sitting on a pile of rubble.
