More model informationThis capital is of a type known as Ovulo-Corinthian. It is of a type originating in Rome’s eastern provinces, which quickly spread throughout the Empire around the 2nd century AD. The Corinthian order was highly sought after in Roman architecture as its elaborate designs provided the building, architects and benefactors the opulence that they usually required in their structures. In Malta the preferred architectural order appears to have been the Doric, which remains predominant in private houses. The Corinthian slowly replaces the Doric in public buildings towards the end of the 1st century AD.
