More model informationThis ox skull was found as part of excavations at Scalford Brook, Melton Mowbray in 1990 on the site of a small farm. It dates from the Late Roman period in the 4th century AD. The skull was found amongst a line of boulders, pottery and other animal bone at the corner of a drainage gully. Many other fragments of ox skull were found buried at the site and their burial may have had some kind of ritual significance. The horns of the ox would have surrounded the bony cores which can still be seen attached to the skull.
