More model informationPaarl rock in South Africa is a massive granitic intrusion. The granites intruded around the same time South America was colliding with Africa. This occurred in multiple stages, starting around 550 million years ago.
Aplite is the same composition as granite, but the cryatals are much smaller. In this model, an aplite dike can be seen cutting across the granite. Notice the regular fracture pattern in the aplite, suggestive of cooling joints. There are also stringers of aplitic material along the edges.
