Palmetto Fiber Art 1893 World's Fair3D ModelNoAI
Exhibited in part at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, this unique and artistic wall covering is made from the “fur” fibers harvested from saw palmettos (Serenoa repens). Julia Daniels Moseley made this textile as a wall covering for a room in her vernacular home in Limona, Florida. After experimenting with how to process and sew the material, she settled on fabricating it into strips that were sewn to burlap of bed ticking for a stable backing, then assembled into rows that were then mounted as a wall covering. The uniqueness and innovation of the work, and its representation of Florida, lead to her art being used as part of the Florida exhibit at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. The fiber wall covering is painted with a design using iridescent colors, with the design compared to peacock feathers or a floral appearance. ![https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50229004606_c301708867_b_d.jpg]
