Under Trajan, Roman Emperor from AD 98 to 117, the Roman Empir reached its greatest extent. The enourmous Roman army consisted primarily of mercenaries, among them Palmyrene archers. as shown here on Trajan’s Column in Rome. The column celebrates the emperor as the master of the world and his victories in Dacia (modern day Romania)
