Papua New Guinea Ancestor Figure3D Model
Figure representing a male ancestor from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. These tribal ancestor figures are kept in the village culte house, usually leaning against the wall at an angle. These figures due not merely represent the ancestor it depicts, but instead is the spirit of the depicted ancestor. These figures are regarded with great respect and reverence.
Due to their profound cultural and spiritual importance, “authentic” carvings must not be sold. Amongst the Iatmul, a cultural group of Papua New Guinea, if a carver received a vision of a spirit and proceeded to carve the spirit, that carving must immediately be placed in the village cult house as it possesses the soul of an ancestor. The figure was made by an artisan of Mindimbit village.
