Paranapiacaba is a english village between Santos and São Paulo. It was built to host the workers of the first brazilian railway, the São Paulo Railway (SPR), in the 19th century, by that time Brazil was governed by D. Pedro II.
Each worker was assigned to a especific type of house accordingly to their hierarchy in the railway. For example, single workers would share a dormitory, when they married they could move to a larger house and so on. This house is popularly called “Castelinho”, which means “Little Castle” in portuguese. Located at the top of one higher cliff in the village, we can see it from anywhere, and also be seen from there. It belonged to the chief-engineer of the village, the highest rank on the railway hierarchy.
Today the house is a museum and host a few original furniture from the 19th century inside.
