Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that causes mucosal edema, excess mucus production, and a hyperresponsiveness to irritation. During an asthma exacerbation, bronchoconstriction, swelling, and mucus production block airways and lead to chest tightness, wheezing, and dyspnea, or labored breathing.
