Pel’s Fishing Owl, native to sub-Saharan Africa, is a unique owl adapted for hunting fish. Unlike other owls, its rough talons help grip slippery prey, and its wings lack the silent flight typical of owls, as it doesn’t need stealth to hunt fish. Recognisable by its tawny-brown feathers and large wingspan (up to 153 cm), this owl glides low over rivers at dusk, skillfully catching fish and frogs.
