More model informationThe saint of the second Bed is Brendan. His origins were in Kerry where he gave his name to Mount Brandon, and where there is a living pilgrimage tradition in his honour. His final monastery was at Clonfert in Galway. Brendan is remembered as an adventurer for Christ. A medieval tale recounts his journey via the Hebrides and Iceland as far as Newfoundland. In 1976-77 the explorer Tim Severin retraced that route in a boat constructed from materials available in the sixth century, in a modern adventure known as The Brendan Voyage. On St Brendan’s Bed in particular, the pilgrim’s bare feet tread the sloping bedrock of Station Island.
