“In 1871, there were 150 male students and professors and 6 women students. The students all live in the old main. The men and women were forbidden from communicating with one another. That did not stop them from banging on the building’s pipe in a coded language. In 1889, construction began on Penn State’s first all-female dorm to house the increasing women students.
Remember, this was back when a male student had to ask the dean’s permission to court a lady on campus, so to be a gentleman caller to one of the Ladies Cottage girls was a pretty big deal. The majority of students did not have the privilage to visit the building. These excluded men formed an organizationand that were devoted to enacting reform on the strict rules of the women’s building.
The building was completely demolished in 1971, primarily due to a lightning struck.” (source: http://onwardstate.com/2015/04/03/penn-state-history-lesson-the-ladies-cottage/)
