More model informationThis peperite formed as basalt lava (dark brown) flowed over a bed of fine, unconsolidated silt/sand (light brown). At the flow margin, pockets of silt/sand were incorporated into the lava. Vesicles formed as gasses escaped leading to rounded holes in the lava. Vesicles that were partially filled with silt/sand serve as markers of orientation (up/down) within the samples. Lateron, quartz (clear/white) precipitated from circulating water. The precipitation appears to be localised around fractures in the rock.
