This ‘Orkney Pestle’ macehead was found in 1958 during excavations at Isbister Chambered Tomb, Liddle, South Ronaldsay. This macehead was concealed in small cache that also comprised of a polished flint knife and three polished stone axeheads; one of the latter was manufactured from haematite. A v-perforated bead was found nearby and this may have been used to secure a bag holding the cache. The artefacts date from the late Neolithic, but the button dates from the early Bronze Age. This indicates the artefacts may have been deposited several hundred years after they were manufactured. For more information see: https://canmore.org.uk/site/9554/south-ronaldsay-isbister
