TUR-12-90568-UN Torpedoed off the coast of Ireland by a German U-Boat on 16 February 1941, the merchant steam boat, the SS Gairsoppa, has lain undisturbed – resting a mile deeper than the Titanic – ever since.

In 2011, the wreck of the SS Gairsoppa was found and an operation to recover its cargo of 110 tons of silver was begun by Odyssey Marine Exploration. By 2013, 48 tons of silver had been recovered and objects, including shoes, teapots, bottles and mail, had also been retrieved.

In 2018, the mail and other items recovered from the wreck, formed the heart of an exhibition at The Postal Museum, called Voices from the Deep: https://www.postalmuseum.org/discover/attractions/voices-from-the-deep/
