The individual PGV10 3157 is a female aged at over 46 years old, identified as an older adult. Being an older aged female the healed femoral neck fracture is very interesting for comparison with clinical data & those affected by fractures mostly occurring as a result of loss of bone density (osteoporosis) causing fragility. The present day ageing population & osteoporosis affecting greater numbers the National Osteoporosis Society identifies that “One in two women & one in five men over the age of 50 experience fractures, mostly as a result of low bone strength”, with hips commonly affected. The skeletal remains of this female were found during excavations by AOC archaeology in Bethnal Green revealing part of an area that had been a privately run burial ground, in use between 1840-1855. The area in East London was socially deprived with the individuals being of a poorer economic status & many of the 1033 individuals excavated exhibiting diseases associated with living in such conditions.
