Il nome dell’isola si riferì, sin dall’Antichità classica, alla sua morfologia pianeggiante: Planasia[2], dall’aggettivo latino planus («piatto»). Durante il Medioevo, il nome dell’isola si trasformò in Planosa.[3]. L’isola fu abitata sin dall’epoca preistorica; le più antiche tracce di presenza umana sono attribuibili al Paleolitico superiore.
