More model informationSample of 20 x 13 x 9cm olivine-rich basalt from the southeastern parking lot of the Fairmont Orchid Resort. This lava flow dates to 3000-5000yrs old, accroding to a USGS geologic map. The olivine crystals were the first minerals to crystalize in cooling magama chamber. The olivine sank to the bottom of the magma chamber over a period of many years enriching the magma at the bottom of the chamber. The olivine crytal-rich baslatic magma then erupted 3-5Ka years ago bringing the crystals to the surface in a gas-rich eruption. The baslat cooled relatively quickly to create the fine-grained vesicular basalt.
