The so-called Akasztódombi Pietà in Mosonmagyaróvár was commissioned in 1653 by János Mey, a high-ranking official of the local court. The group of figures, standing on a tall stone column, depicts Mary with the dead Christ in her lap. The shaft bears a German inscription as well as the donor’s coat of arms. The monument is associated with the judicial system of the time and the former execution site on the so-called “Gallows Hill.”
