More model informationThis brightly coloured fragment is part of an object known as a ‘pillow stone’, a polished stone artefact type that is unique to Neolithic Orkney. It was discovered during the 2023 excavations in the midden deposits overlying Structure 30, one of the later buildings in the trench. Several other pillow stones have been found at the Ness, made of various types of stone: this one, like two others previously, appears to be made of rhodochrosite, a mineral that can be sourced from the Orkney island of Hoy.
