Pipe Bowl Fragment - Barwick's Ordinary3D Model
A fragment of a pipe bowl as found during excavations of Barwick’s Ordinary, an archaeological site in Eastern Maryland of a late 1700s tavern and inn. Such pipe bowls are common artifacts for the period, although the complex of buildings at Barwick’s also included a tobacco warehouse and James Barwick was paid in tobacco for his duties (McKnight and Singer, “James Barwick’s Ordinary: Geophysical Remote Sensing at an 18th-Century Tavern Site in Caroline County, Maryland,” Maryland Archaeology, 2020). A prominent maker’s mark is visible on this artifact.
This model was made through photogrammetry with Agisoft MetaShape, Blender, and Instant Meshes. A normal map is used to help make the maker’s mark clearer. Modeling was done by Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum in collaboration with the Maryland Historical Trust and Washington College during the Archaeological Society of Maryland’s annual field session for 2022.
