Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is caused by a genetic mutation and causes cysts to form in the kidneys. Over time, the cysts can prevent the kidneys from properly filtering the blood, which may lead to failure. While kidney failure may be treated with dialysis, a transplant is the most prescient method of treatment.

In kidney transplants, depending on the severity of the diseased kidneys, and the likelihood of their causing future problems, the recipient kidneys may be left intact. The donor kidney is transplanted along with the donor’s renal artery, vein, and ureter into the lower abdomen of the recipient.
