Platy ped3D Model
For soil structure description, we collect an intact aggregate from the soil pit and record Type, Grade, and Size. 1. Type (formerly shape): Platy structure 2. Grade (how easily the structure is observed in place in the pedon): strong (code 3), units are distinct in place 3. Size: very thick (> 10 mm). Description: the aggregate shows clear flat and plate-like units that are aligned parallel to the soil surface. When aggregates with platy structure are found near to the soil surface, they are typically formed by compaction of the terrain, e.g. due to intense traffic of heavy tractors and machines. However, the formation of platy structure in the B horizon may have its genesis related to wet-dry and/or freeze-throw cycles, which are transmitted into the soil along planes that parallel the surface (Schaetzl and Anderson, 2005). This intact aggregate of platy structure was collected from the Schmidt farm (UTM 44.627008, -123.214956). The soil is classified Amity (Mollisol)
