More model informationLyme Regis, Dorset, England. Lower Jurassic. (~200 million years old).
Possibly collected and restored by Mary Anning, this partially preserved flipper belonged to a plesiosaur (Plesiosaurus), an extinct marine reptile. Plesiosaurs had four flippers as seen in modern turtles, the only living group to exhibit this trait.
Mary spoke of her plesiosaur finds in a letter to fellow fossil collector Sarah Kennaway, detailing the diversity of fossils that could be found between Charmouth and Axmouth, showing how diverse marine life once was in the Jurassic seas.
