This pole weapon is associated with the Radical War of 1820, also known as the Scottish Insurrection. One of nine, it’s unlike the others its smooth shaft suggests it may have been reused.
The Radical War was a week of strikes and unrest that arose following demands for reform in the UK. After the Napoleonic War there was economic downturn and workers sought action to reform the government.
On Monday 3 April 1820 around 60,000 workers went on strike over a wide area of central Scotland. Many of the uprisers had fought in the Napoleonic Wars. Foundries and forges were raided for items to make weapons, and the disgruntled workers took part in military drills.
After a week of unrest, government troops crushed the reformers and many were sentenced to death.
