More model informationThis beautiful finely polished plain stone ball, which probably dates from the Neolithic, was found at Backaskaill, Papa Westray, Orkney in the 19th century. It formed part of George Petrie’s collection, before it was acquired by the National Museum. This artefact is manufactured from a striking black and white gneiss, which occurs as glacial erratics in the Glacial Till in Orkney.
This artefact can be compared with Neolithic caved stone balls found in Scotland, but closer parallels can be drawn with the polished plain stone balls which occur in the Irish Neolithic.
