The first time I saw this model, I thought it was the David of the automotive modelling world—and its creator was Michelangelo with a graphics card.

I downloaded the files, opened the textures and discovered an entirely new universe populated by baffling creatures called normals, bump maps, scattering and masks. I understood approximately none of it, so I quietly retreated before the computer discovered I was an impostor.

Years later, after accumulating enough knowledge to become moderately dangerous, I finally attempted to restore the car. Yet my respect for both the model and its astonishingly gifted creator has never diminished.

I’ve repaint many cars since then and occasionally catch myself thinking I’m rather good. Then I revisit this model and the artist’s channel, take a deep breath and remember: I’m still a primary-school pupil—and there is a magnificent world ahead of me.
