This Late Mesolithic (c8,000 to c3,500 BC) flint flake from Wales has been 3D imaged for the Portalis Project which explores the first connection between Ireland and Wales, dating back to the Mesolithic period, about 10,000 years ago. The transdisciplinary project investigates, through evidence based research, how those first settlers adapted to their surroundings in order to survive and seeks to understand whether there are any parallels with how we can adapt to climate change now. Flakes are sometimes classed as debitage or waste but were also used as tools. This flake (approx 3.20cm length) shows clear edge damage which means it was used as a tool rather than discarded as waste.
This model was generated by Dr SarahMDuffy.uk using a Photogrammetric appoach which produces an accurate record of an object’s size and shape.
