Porth y Rhaw Promontory Fort - February 2019
Porth y Rhaw is a complex prehistoric promontory fort situated to the south of St Davids in Pembrokeshire. Large portions of the fort have been affected by coastal and terrestrial erosion with around three-quarters of the site believed to have been lost. Today it exists as two thin ‘horn-like’ promontories enclosed by a series of complex and inter-linking banks and ditches with two southern entrances.
Excavations have shown that the fort likely began life in the Early to Middle Iron Age with occupation continuing into the Roman period.
Porth y Rhaw will be carefully monitored and investigated by the CHERISH Project to unlocked more of site’s history before more is lost.
