There are three categories of trauma that describe the relationship of the trauma to the death event: antemortem (before death), perimortem (around death) and post-mortem (after death) trauma. As fresh and dead bones react in different ways to the forces applied, these traumas can be distinguished based on the morphological characteristics exhibited by these injuries.
