More model informationThe portal tomb at Poulnabrone is probably the most famous and photographed ‘dolmen’ in Ireland. It dates to the Neolithic Period and may have been in use for approximately 600 years. The chamber was excavated by Ann Lynch in the mid-1980s after a serious crack in one of the portal stones threatened to cause the collapse of the monument. The bones of around 22 adults and 6 children were found inside in a dis-articulated state. Rather than complete bodies being placed in the tomb the bones had been gathered up and placed within the spaces inside the chamber and between the cracks in the bedrock.
