LSU President F. King Alexander visited the DIVA Lab (Digital Imaging and Visualization in Archaeology) at Louisiana State University (LSU). We scan waterlogged wooden posts, ceramics, and other objects from the Underwater Maya project, where wooden buildings were preserved below the sea floor from the Classic Maya times (A.D. 300-900). President Alexander spoke with undergrads and grads in the DIVA Lab, had his photo taken holding a full-size 3D printed replica of the Maya canoe paddle, and then PhD. candidate Val Feathers did a 3D head scan. We later 3D printed it and took it over to his office. In the DIVA Lab we scan archaeological material for research and offer an LSU course on 3D digital imaging. Sometimes we scan and print for fun, such as 3D head scans and 3D full body scans. Check us out on facebook (DIVA Lab) and the new web site (underwatermaya.com). I’m underwatermaya (Heather McKillop, faculty at LSU).
