Ptygmatic folding occurs when a band of material that has a higher viscocity and structural competency than the surrounding medium is deformed (as shown by the folded band of pegmatitic metrial within this Migmatite specimen).
Ptygmatic fold bands are typically discontinuous and erratic, with the frequency of the folds being controlled by the thickness of the band being deformed.
