This model shows the northern section of the site. You can see from the cross-section that the heiau was built on a substantial slope. A line of trees follows the division between the northern and central divisions. The trees have been digitally removed from the site, but you can see their locations from the remaining “stumps.” The walls to the north and west have toppled, but you can still see small sections of intact facing. The eastern - makai - face has completely toppled. There is a small cave beneath the largest boulder.
This model of Punalu‘u Heiau 3 on O‘ahu was created as part of Kamehameha Schools Wahi Kūpuna 3D Mapping Project. This initiative was developed as an educational and community resource providing virtual access to wahi kūpuna (ancestral sites) to preserve, perpetuate, and embody the traditions of our kūpuna.
