Use: Historic beads were introduced to Hawaiʻi during the post-Contact Era and adorned by both makaʻāinana and aliʻi. They came in a multitude of shapes, colors, sizes and material types. During the post-Contact Era, it was common to find lei strung of kupeʻe shell and palaoa (ivory) that also incorporated glass beads.
