More model informationPurple dye can be obtained from the secretion of a gland of the purple snail. The colorless secretion first turns green in sunlight, then blue, and then purple and scarlet. As early as the 1st millennium BC, the Phoenicians used purple snails for dyeing. Roman magistrates and senators wore their togas with a purple stripe and the togas of Roman emperors were also dyed with purple. Since the amount of secretion from a snail is very small, about 10,000 purple snails were needed for 1 kg of wool. Purple snails were imported to Carnuntum for further processing. h 6,6 cm.
