To avoid vicious throws during dice games, the Romans used a tower – pyrgus –, usually of great aesthetic value and on which a propitiatory phrase was inscribed. In the case of the bronze pyrgus in the Roman bathhouse of Chaves, it can be read “Just as the quadriga sometimes rolls when leaving the barriers, so the dice thrown falls down the stairs of the pirgo. Made by Sorico’s workshop. Use it with luck!”
