Type: Metamorphic rock - non-foliated
Description: Quartzite is a granular, non-foliated (granoblastic) metamorphic rock, consisting mainly of quartz and formed by the recrystallization of quartz-rich sedimentary rocks (protolith/parent-rock: sandstone, conglomerate, chert, and others) by either regional or contact metamorphism. Also named meta-quartzite. Variations in colors, in textures, and in impurities (up to 40%) give rise to numerous varieties (e.g., black or white quartzite, micaceous quartzite, feldspathic quartzite, magnetitic quartzite, etc.).
Essential minerals: quartz
Non-essential minerals: mica, feldspar, etc.
