QF 12-pounder | Whitby Harbour3D ModelNoAI
Naval gun mounted at Battery Parade, Whitby, on the North Yorkshire coast. 12-pounder refers to the weight of the shot. These 3” guns were in use primarily by British forces from 1894 until at least the Second World War. I think I’ve got the designation in the title correct, but happy to be corrected if anyone knows better.
The plaque states that it came from the wreck of the African Transport, a nearby British armed merchantman torpedoed in 1918. However, that wreck still has its QF 4.7” gun attached, so it remains unclear exactly where it came from. Perhaps it was under transport? Unlikely as she was in convoy carrying coal. Variants of these guns were also used by the Japanese Imperial Navy during the first half of the 20th Century, and there appears to be some vague Oriental(?) inscription above a screw thread on the right hand side, picture below. Many possible wrecks in the area, including SS Skane (1918).
