The crystal structure of quartz consists of silicon atoms each bonded to four oxygen atoms, as shown in this model. Quartz is one of the most common mineral and from the structural-chemical point of view - is a tectosilicate. Minerals from the silicates class are divided into subclasses depending on the degree of polymerization of the SiO4 tetrahedra. In the case of Quartz, Individual tetrahedra are polymerized into three-dimensional spirals, or helices, which run parallel to the crystal’s Z-axis. Helixes can be left- or right-handed. The full structure of quartz consists of pairs of helices, spiralling their way up the structure’s Z-axis.
